A Study on the Relationship of Parents’ Child-rearing Attitude and Internalizing or Externaizing Problems in Elementary School-children

Abstract

|
|
Objectives： This study examined the relationship between parents’ child rearing attitudes and children’s problem behaviors.
Methods：We screened 3,189 parents of elementary school students in the Paju city, Gyeonnggi Province. Three hundred and twenty four children who showed over 13 scores based on Conners Parent Symptom Questionnaire (CPSQ) were evaluated for the parent’s rearing attitudes using Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire(PARQ) and children’s problem behaviors by Korean Child Behavior Checklist(K-CBCL).
Results：Children’s social competence and behaviors and parents’ attitudes toward child rearing statistically had a significant correlation with elementary students’ behavioral problems. In particular, parents’ negative attitudes toward child rearing was related with children’s depression/anxiety, attention problems, aggressive behaviors scores on K-CBCL.
Conclusions：Parents’ negative attitudes toward child rearing were found to be related with children’s internal conflicts and external behavioral problems.
